how to make a complete idiot of yourself AND…

have your children show sympathy towards you:

1.  volunteer to take your children shopping at thrift stores to find pieces to their halloween costumes.

2.  exhaust yourself looking for said halloween costumes going to 3 different stores and only finding stuff for your next-door neighbor’s costume and a costume for savannah, which you really don’t need as you have a huge selection of little girl costumes to choose from at home.  but it’s too cute to pass up so you buy it anyway.

3.  find yourself at target, 3 hours into your “journey” and wondering what you’ll be doing for dinner as it is 5:30 and everyone is hungry, especially you.

4.  can’t quite bring yourself to fork over $25 for everyone to eat a delicious meal at target so you do the noble thing and just waste money on food for your kids at target, saving yourself a whole 5 bucks.

5.  except you’re still hungry and tired.

6.  get overcharged by a whopping 50 cents [fifty entire pennies!!] by the poor teenager who has just started her employment at the target food court today and doesn’t know how to ring up a kid’s meal pepperoni pizza and charges you for the items a la carte.

7.  tell the innocent girl of her mistake only to have her not understand what the problem is so she calls her co-worker over to help me.

8.  it is the co-worker’s first day also.

9.  but he is willing to get the manager, which i decline because it’s silly and not worth the 50 cents and walk away.

10.  but i’m still annoyed because i asked for a kid’s meal and she didn’t charge me for a kid’s meal.  it’s about the principle of the matter.

11. so i go back and tell the poor teenager that, actually, i would like to speak to the manager and get your 50 cents returned to me.

12.  wait for the manager.  for about 20 minutes.

13.  wonder why there are 2 first-day employees working together without anyone else to help them out.

14.  ask the target employee if he really paged his manager to help me.

15.  get instructed to go to customer service desk because that might be faster.

15.  go to customer service desk only to be told they don’t understand the issue; i’ll have to take it up with food court.

16.  explain that the food court people don’t know what they’re doing.

17.  have the customer service lady disappear to the food court for a mere 15 minutes to find out what the problem is only to have her return with the information that they don’t have a pepperoni pizza with icee kid’s meal on their menu.

18.  um, yes you do.  she charged me for 2 other kid’s pizza meals.  it’s on the bottom left corner of your menu.  i’d be happy to show you.

19.  let me call the manager.

20.  really?  i just want my 50 cents back.  is it really necessary to track down a manager.  i’ve already been trying to resolve this for 40 minutes now.

21.  the pleasant manager comes to help me.

22. but he doesn’t seem to understand what the problem is.

23.  um, the food court people don’t know what they’re doing and they rang up my kid’s meal as 2 a la carte items and i was overcharged 50 cents.

24.  manager stares at the receipt and tries to put all the puzzling pieces together.  so you were overcharged?

25.  yes.

26.  let’s go over to the food court and figure this out.

27.  at which point i start bawling, rip the receipt out of the nice man’s hand and tell him it’s not worth my time anymore.  can’t he understand i just want the injustice rectified….30 minutes ago?!!

28.  storm out of target, in tears, with 5 baffled children in tow.

29.  to which my 7-year-old kindly offers to give me 50 cents of his own money.

30.  and so i cry a little harder.

31.  but my children all thank me profusely for buying them their delicious kid’s meals AND icees.  and they were so good and they ate all of them.  and, mom, are you ok?

32.  i will be in about 5 minutes because it’s date night and we’re going out to eat now- not at target.

that’s it.  i’m a loser, i know.

POST EDIT:  apparently, my state of mind was such that i failed to recognize the correct age and gender of said child in #29.  let it be corrected that SHE was my oldest, most generous and loving daughter, miss Ellison.

  2. You are not a loser. It's not like you yelled at the Target manager like some people would. (Certainly not me.) And no one ended up wearing that overpriced Icee. You were the queen of self-restraint. ;-D

Now let's hope the restaurant doesn't screw up your bill.
