blackberry picking. it’s the hip thing to do in washington right now. blackberries are weeds here and they’re all over the place. in the month of august, we sometimes bring ziploc bags with us on our walk to church so we can pick them on our way home.
the recent weather here has definitely been prime berry-picking weather: in the 60’s and 70’s. today was no exception. we even felt a few raindrops. loved it.
love:
- free berries!
- lovely homemade pie
- {most} kids happily working together [without even realizing it]
- berry-stained faces, lips, and fingers
- time together
- berry-picking weather (not so much fun in the direct sun)
- the excitement of a child when he/she “hits the jackpot” and finds a ton of ripe berries in one area
don’t love:
- the injuries
- whining kids
- kids comparing fullness of berry buckets
- kids begging me to put the berries i’m picking into their bucket [they’re all going to the same place: a pie]
- kids stopping picking to eat berries or sit while i still labor
- berry-stained clothing
- leaning way into get that awesomely HUGE berry that has been overlooked by other berry-pickers and having it drop out of my hands just after i’ve picked it [grrrrr!]
- getting stuck in a prickly predicament
- how fast blackberries get squished
- having children tell me they don’t even like blackberries anymore
and now i need to go make that pie…
I have a weird aversion to cooked fruit, but I'm going to make some seedless blackberry shakes and blackberry lemonade after we finally get around to picking them. Blackberry lemonade is heavenly.
ReplyDeletewell, look at you all happy and home-makey. seriously? you're going to make a fruit pie ... after picking fresh berries? i don't know if i'm really surprised or just jealous. it's amazing what proper weather will do for you.
