it’s back to the grind. my morning started off with a very early trip to the dentist with my favorite 7-year-old patient. There, i was met by the dental hygienist who promptly noticed my flat belly and excitedly asked how the baby was doing. to which i started to cry and had to explain that the baby had died. i need to come up with a simple, comforting way to break that news to people. i haven’t figured that one out yet.
nolan impressed in the dentist chair. he is so brave and hardly lets on at all that he is nervous. if it weren’t for his shoes tapping together at the end of the long chair, i would have never known the apprehension he was feeling about getting his cavities filled. when the dentist pulled out the needle full of Novocain, nolan simply said, “i don’t like this part, but go ahead and do it anyway.” love that kid.
then it was home to pick up emma and savannah and off to school for those three. then back home to discover that elli left her basketball shorts in the entryway. she had basketball pictures and her first game immediately after school today so it wasn’t the day to let her learn a lesson and be without her shorts {that i recommended she put in her bag at least 5 times yesterday and once this morning before i left for the dentist}. then i came back home and cleaned the kitchen and showered and put mousse in my hair even. yippee for me!
and then it was time to go pick the kids up from school- half day. and then turn right around and go back to the school for back-t0-back-to-back parent teacher conferences. which i loved. i rarely am disappointed with my children after a parent-teacher conference. sometimes i learn surprising things about my kids (like last year when i learned from ray’s teacher that he wasn’t very fond of music- what?!!), but i always leave those conferences thinking my kids are pretty darn awesome. and unique. and super smart. and well-rounded. and well-liked. and that i should really be recognizing how excellent they are on a more regular basis. because they are just that: excellent.
next, it was off to Ellison’s first junior high basketball game. and she was awesome in that, too. she didn’t make a single shot, but it wasn’t for lack of effort. she played a great game and was aggressive and hustled and was all over her girl on defense and shot basket after basket and just never had it go her way. but she made me proud. she is excellent, too.
and now we’re off to see A Christmas Carol in 3-D at the IMAX. the whole family- which we may end up regretting because it’s supposed to be pretty scary. but we are taking our most excellent family anyway. and then home to at least a triple sleepover {at last count}.
life is busy. and excellent today.
I saw a gift idea in a magazine today that made me think of you and your kids...you really NEED to get several of them. It was called "My quotable kid" and it was a journal to keep track of the cute and remarkable things your kids say. It was $15 from chroniclebook.com. Glad you had an "excellent" day with your "excellent" kids.
ReplyDeleteAwesome.
ReplyDeleteNow that is one awesome day!
ReplyDeleteHope your little ones got through A Christmas Carol okay. My little Sydney had a tough time. Even the previews she had seen of the movie scared her. The entire first half of the movie was spent with her eyes closed and ears plugged. When she was finally brave enough to peek she insisted on sitting on my lap and hugging my arms. And she WOULD NOT wear her 3D glasses.
ReplyDeletei appreciate this post for the perspective you give it. you could have written this a myriad different ways, but you CHOSE to have such a great attitude toward seeing the excellentness. someting i need to be nudged in remembering the choice.
ReplyDeleteamen to the typical busy day. i've had one, too. sometimes i am really taken back at what great people my kids are. love those times. proud of elli for working so hard on her basketball game. wish i could have seen her play when i was there. thoughts on the movie? we don't typically do family movies, but this christmas i can already think of one that we will be seeing. hope it was a great family night.
