habits

at the beginning of the school year, we had a lesson on habits for Family Night.  it was not a stellar lesson- or even a memorable one at that.  it ended the way most of my lessons do:  with a challenge to work on the topic (making good habits, ridding ourselves of bad ones)- that would be long forgotten by tuesday.  admittedly, we’re just not very good at follow-through for FHE most weeks.

one of the things we did that night was each of us was given a small index card and an envelope with our names written on them.  the assignment:  on one side, each of us was to write down 3-5 good habits we’d like to have in our lives and on the other side , we wrote 1-2 bad habits we’d like to be rid of.   we also had a FAMILY envelope with family habits written down.   then we put our index cards inside the envelopes and promptly forgot about the lessons we were supposed to be learning.

it wasn’t until i was cleaning my kitchen window sill off last week that i came across that stack of envelopes.  it was one of those days where i just needed to get rid of everything and so those envelopes- all 8 of them- went straight to the recycle bin.

but, then i was curious.  i wanted to know what elli’s habits were; what bad habits was she aware of in herself and what things did she think were important to add to her life?   so i peeked.  and was pleased with her thoughts.

so i pulled mine out of the recycle, too.  wondering if i, myself, had taken that assignment seriously.  and i remembered i had.  i had really thought about those good habits i wanted in my life and in my family’s life.

i was expecting to be disappointed with myself for yet another failure in my life.  instead, my eyes immediately filled with tears as i read my list of 5 simple, yet hard for me, habits i wanted to form in my life.

good tears.  because they are all things i am currently doing in my life.  and not because i’ve been working on them since september.  strangely enough, they are only habits that have been formed in the last several weeks.  go figure.
