my 12-year-old has way more fashion sense than i did at her age. i think i was sleeping in my next-day’s clothes (thanks for the idea, Pep!) of an oversized Tweety-bird T-shirt and my favorite pair of ankle-zipped {Pierson girls hand-me-down} Guess jeans. the bell ringing for horizon elementary school may very well have been my wake-up alarm. i usually looked pretty awesome when i ran out the front door every morning with my short, frizzy hair and yellow leather reebok hightops (thank you, dana umble). and my mom was defnitely way proud of my feminine fashion choices. right, mom?
in fact, my daughter has way more fashion sense than i do at 35. and i love it.

yesterday, elli was quick to ask for a ride to the mall to spend her birthday gift cards, just minutes after her friends left our home. she even asked if emma could accompany her. weird. she must have been just as tired of her friends as i was. (just kidding, girls)
anwyay, they ended up at aeropostale where elli tried on this great dress. it looked adorable on her. i told her i thought it was great for school, but maybe a little too short for church. and since i have an opinion about wearing leggings under dresses to church, that wasn’t an option. she was ok with that, she said. and she decided to buy it anyway- just for school.
she wore it last night to a little party she went to, paired with black leggings and a cropped cardigan. super cute.

this morning she came upstairs wearing the same dress (that i had already told her was not appropriate for church). before i could engage in an argument with her, she showed me the bottom of her dress. it had a new, longer layer. and it looked great. and modest. and just right for church.
wanna know her secret?
an extra skirt underneath her dress. awesome.
style. color. modesty. obedience. beauty. confidence.
she’s got it all.
amy, you will be happy to know that mom definitely confirmed your suspicion that elli has better fashion sense than you do/did {was on the phone with her setting her up on google reader when she read your post ... and btw, taught her how to follow blogs}. love the dress. adorable. reminded me of something i saw on our morning news show here - i just spent 30 minutes trying to re-find it for you so you better go visit the site if only to humor me. vintagehem.com. kinda pricey, but i love the idea and it would be super easy to make, i think. also, what is your beef with the legging issue? {and don't check, this doesn't mean i have posted yet today ... i'm working on it.}

ReplyDeleteabout the leggings...totally love the leggings paired with flowy dresses kind of look, but i think it's too casual for church. i think it totally dresses it down. fine for school and the beach and the mall and just about anywhwere else, but just bugs me at church. anyone else agree?

ReplyDeleteFirst, Elli is such a cutie! And second, I agree about the leggings...kinda. My beef with them is that girls tend to wear them under skirts/dresses that are too short for church as if to cover up to be modest. But really all leggings are are really thick tights. So you are still "showing off" all of your legs that are not covered by the skirt/dress. Just because you can't see skin doesn't mean your being modest. Same reason a skin tight shirt or dress is inappropriate. However, I really do love the legging look. Just not at church. You should be so proud that she was already one step ahead of you by having the skirt already on. Good job Elli!

ReplyDeleteI was actually noticing that all of the Barry girls looked so cute at church today--lots of bright, fun colors. Elli is beautiful; she has definitely got style. I like the skirt trick. I agree with you on leggings--too casual for church, and does not make things that are too short/tight modest.
ReplyDeleteOkay, so I actually noticed it today! I was thinking that you had probably come up with the idea though... they sell those at shade.com (the under skirt inserts)... and I thought that's what it was! She's a clever one!!! I really enjoy havin gher in my beehives! She's such a doll!
ReplyDeleteShe seriously could be a model for one of the modest clothing stores. SHe is so pretty! I hate leggings. I have even seen a few adults wear them at church. I guess if that is all you have. But if you put that much thought into buying leggings to wear... why not go a little further and wear a nicer skirt or dress. I really don;t care what people wear to church as long as it is modest though. It's not a fashion show. I do agree it is important to look nice though. :)

ReplyDeleteAnd I agree with you that leggins under a dress are way cute, but not appropriate for church. Too casual, and as discussed they do not make something more modest. My brother told me they were having a problem with girls at BYU thinking this was modest, so it was announced that leggins did not make an outfit BYU appropriate.
April- glad to know you enjoy Elli in Beehives. She is SO EXCITED to be there. yesterday when nolan was sick, damon and i realized that neither of us was available to stay home with him during 3rd hour. Elli immediately said, "i'm not available either. i'm in young women now. i can't miss church." so awesome. thanks for loving her.
